Alone is looking at the singleton’s lifestyle that you get when you’re a free agent playing the field, that young free &

single mindset. The song is just asking whether or not after all the date game playing & one night stand novelty excitement wares away, whilst some will feel no abyss of any kind, could it be that many will go to bed at night, lay their heads on the pillows and wish for just a little bit more.

Musically this is a very bluesy song. The guitar is very open & wanted a strong vocal melody popping against it. In my mind, as soon as I wrote it I could hear bluesy mouth harp coming in & gospel style female vocals over the top. When recording this I was conscious of leaving plenty of space for the additional parts to unfold. 

With the idea being my vocals taking lead on the verses - then as they dropped out, the harmonica kicks in filling the spaces which the guitar has purposely left, then as the bridge comes the harmonica drifts out letting the female vocals take bite & then the chorus has all 3 elements finally come together. I was really happy on my first hearing of the final mix that all of this worked in actuality on a par with what had been envisioned.
