10 - Not today
I love the fun of this song - the way it’s played almost gives it a lazy, dragging guitar, laid back attitude. Yet it still keeps a vibrant bounce & energy.
Lyrically this is simply about getting off your backside. The things we all have guilty moments of. I strongly feel that absolutely everybody has something that is just theirs, something they purely have a natural aptitude for – but few ever reach that obtainable potential.
I am so guilty of never getting organised, or not finishing things. We seem to have it within us to skirt issues, or find distractions – which then become our excuses for not finding the time - and then I think we all gain a little guilt because subconsciously we are aware that we do this.
But in our knowledge that everybody is guilty of this, we can (as I often do) smile about it. The New Year resolutions that you fully know you won’t instill – even while you are making them – but so what, you’re aware it isn’t such a bad thing. This song is actually about that slight fun element in not always having to chase everything, it’s not preaching – instead it’s saying if it bothers you then get up & do it, but if you’re content then does it really matter.
I know who I am, I can say this or that, but I know my habits & I’m fully aware that I won’t start jogging next week, or cut back on chocolate, or get my computer files totally up to date, or put all my song lyrics in one book or place. I could do a lot more & I’m always conscious of that, but at the same time at least I am always doing something & I’m happy & to me that’s enough.
As theses lyrics say “We’re going to change the world some way, just not today.”
Not today by John Fisher - lyrics
One day, one morning
I am going to rise to the occasion
But not today
Another day, another morning
I will get a hold of the feeling
But not today
No, not today
And the feelings come, but then they go
We say we’ll rise above, but then we don’t
I’m going to change the world some way
But not today
That other day, that other morning
I’ll get a hold of the feelings
Just not today
No not today
And we’ll write it all down, but then we don’t
Say we’ll sing you a song, but then we can’t
We’re going to change the world this way
But not today
