03 - Look and you will see
Again this song has a link with inner demons. I wrote it at a similar era to ‘Darkest Day’, but instead of the lyrics actually coming from somebody who has wrestled with their own devils, this song was inspired by the admiration I have acquired from watching a close friend suffer through emotionally crippling ordeals & come out on the other side as a very strong person. Lyrically this deals with isolation & the growth which this can evoke – rising up when facing mountainous woes that have endless peaks & above all finding that smile again if it becomes lost within all the stresses & burdens of life.
Musically this is quite a fusion really. The under-pinning pick that rolls throughout the song reminds me of a western film theme. But this is then over-laced with Spanish chords & additionally, snappy guitar licks gel it together -which miraculously seem to sit as they morph in & out of Spanish based scales and the Blues.
Over all of this the vocals are raw & exposed whilst sounding a touch balladic, and the content of the lyrics going against the grain of everything around them by broaching such a serious topic. Theoretically this shouldn’t really work as a whole, but for all that’s going on, the song actually sounds quite bare bones & stripped. So somewhat of a hybrid, but it works and I feel comes across very much as a story-teller’s piece.
Look and you will see by John Fisher - lyrics
Once
In his lonely town
Lived a boy
Turned into a man
There
Facing devils
Hiding within the eyes
And chained upon his hands
Draining his soul
Ever climbing
Mountainous woes
Where peaks have not an end
Brother of mine
Find your smile
Dig deep
Is it in your reach
Brother of my
Could you drown in that smile
Dive deep
Look and you will see
